The Triumph of Death (English: Trionfo della Morte)

The Triumph of Death (English: Trionfo della Morte)

A full-length novel by Italian author D'Annunzio. Published in 1894. Together with "Pleasure" and "The Innocents", it is one of the "Romantic Rose" trilogy. Like the previous two works, it depicts the conflict and journey of sexual psychology. The protagonist, Giorgio Aurispa, is obsessed with his lover Ippolita, but is tormented by anxiety and dissatisfaction that he cannot possess her completely, as well as physical and mental weakness. To free himself from this allure that he cannot overcome in any way (the original title that was thought of was "The Unconquerable", which becomes the title of the final chapter), Giorgio first places his hopes for salvation in the primal wildness of his hometown and his bloodline, and then in Nietzsche's idea of the "superman". However, his physical and mental exhaustion and lethargy gradually increase his delusions of death, and he finally decides to take the leap into death, taking Ippolita with him. This work is notable for being the first to clearly demonstrate D'Annunzio's resonance with the idea of the "superman," marking a turning point in the author's artistic and philosophical career, as well as for the references to Wagner's music in the work and his assertion in the preface of the novel's "musical" style.
