Hekizan Diary - Hekizan Nichiroku

Japanese: 碧山日録 - へきざんにちろく
Hekizan Diary - Hekizan Nichiroku
This is the diary of Taigyoku, the owner of Reiinken in Tofukuji Temple, Kyoto. The title comes from the fact that Taigyoku lived in a corner of Reiinken, which he named "Hekizan Keisho." Extant articles are from 1459 to 1463, as well as from 1465 and 1468. It describes the movements of temples and society on the eve of the Onin War and the Bunmei War, and is full of fascinating details, such as the relief efforts by the fundraising monk Gan'a of Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto during the Great Kansho Famine, and the activities of foot soldiers during the war.
