Takayasu Castle

Japanese:
Takayasu Castle
Takayasuyama (488m) is an ancient mountain castle built at the southern end of the Ikoma mountain range, which forms the border between Yamato and Kawachi. The castle area is estimated to straddle the current towns of Heguri and Misato in Nara Prefecture and Yao City in Osaka Prefecture. It was one of the castles built in Western Japan after the defeat at the Battle of Hakusukinoe, and the entry for November 667 (the 6th year of the reign of Emperor Tenchi) in the Nihon Shoki states that it was built along with Yashima Castle in Sanuki and Kanata Castle in Tsushima. However, the article on the repair of Takayasu Castle in the 2nd year of the reign of Emperor Mommu (698) in the Shoku Nihongi states that it was built in 666, which is a one-year discrepancy. In 701, it was decided to abandon the castle, and in 712, the Takayasu beacon that had been installed nearby was also abolished. During this time, during the Jinshin Rebellion in 672, Prince Oama's forces attacked Takayasu Castle, which was defended by the Omi Imperial Court, and the Omi forces burned the tax storehouse and fled. The two books above show that the castle was repaired several times, and Empress Jito even visited the castle. In August 712, after the castle was abandoned, Emperor Genmei also visited the castle, and there are various theories on how to interpret this article. For a long time after the castle was abandoned, the location of the castle was unknown, but in 1978, the foundation stones for six warehouses were discovered in the mountains of Heguri Town, and excavations conducted in 1982-1983 confirmed that they were the remains of warehouses from Takayasu Castle.
