Mount Tokachi - Tokachidake

Japanese:
Mount Tokachi - Tokachidake

It is the main peak of the Tokachi volcanic chain (Biei-Tokachi-Kamihorokametoku-Furano) that runs northeast-southwest along the border of the Kamikawa and Tokachi Regional Subprefectural Bureaus in central Hokkaido, and is the southwestern end of the Kuril volcanic belt. It is 2,077 meters above sea level. It is a triple stratovolcano of basalt and andesite that was formed on a pyroclastic rock plateau of rhyolitic pumice flows that erupted in the Tertiary and Quaternary Periods of the Cenozoic Era. There are records of several small eruptions, including major eruptions in 1857 (Ansei 4), 1925 (Taisho 14) to 1928 (Showa 3), and 1962 (Showa 37), but all of them were explosive. The craters of the three major eruptions and the sulfur vents that became active around 1952 are still active, and a series of earthquakes occurred in 1968-1969. The Asahikawa Local Meteorological Observatory is constantly monitoring the area. A major explosion on May 24, 1926 (Taisho 15) sent huge mudflows as far as the towns of Biei and Kami-Furano at the foot of the mountain, killing 144 and injuring about 200. A major explosion on June 29, 1962 (with smoke rising about 12,000 meters above the summit) destroyed sulfur mine facilities with volcanic blocks, killing 5 and injuring 11, and causing great damage from falling ash and sand.

The area is rich in hot springs, including Shirogane Onsen at the northern foot of the mountain, and skiing and mountain climbing are also popular. It is part of the Daisetsuzan National Park, and tourism development is progressing. The most common route for mountain climbing is from Biei Station on the JR Furano Line to Shirogane Onsen to Bougakudai to below the crater rim.
