The city is located in the Tokamachi Basin in the middle reaches of the Shinano River in the southern part of Niigata Prefecture, and includes the eastern part of the Higashikubiki Hills. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It is served by the Iiyama Line and the Hokuetsu Express Hokuhoku Line. The city's name comes from the fact that the market was established once every ten days. Handlooms have been developed here since ancient times, and it is known as the production area of Tokamachi Akashi Chijimi. Even today, it produces a large amount of high-quality silk fabrics such as gossamer, and textiles are a major industry in the city, with the city's shipment value of manufactured goods reaching 50.3 billion yen (2003). It is one of the snowiest areas in the country, and its February Snow Festival is as famous as the Sapporo Snow Festival. Matsunoyama Onsen is located in the west. In April 2005, Kawanishi Town and Nakazato Village in Nakauonuma County, Matsushiro Town in Higashikubiki County, and Matsunoyama Town were incorporated into the city. 新潟県南部，信濃川中流の十日町盆地を占め，東頸城(ひがしくびき)丘陵東部を含む市。1954年市制。飯山線，北越急行ほくほく線が通じる。市名は十日に一度市が立ったことに由来する。古くから手機(てばた)が発達，十日町明石縮(ちぢみ)の産地として知られ，現在も御召など高級絹織物を多産し，繊維工業は主要産業で，市の製造品出荷額は503億円（2003）。全国有数の豪雪地帯で，２月の雪祭は札幌雪まつりと並んで有名。西部に松之山温泉がある。2005年４月中魚沼郡川西町，中里村，東頸城郡松代町，松之山町を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。590.39km²。５万8911人（2010）。
