キンポウゲ科（APG分類：キンポウゲ科）キンポウゲ属の総称。一年草または多年草。北半球の寒冷地から温帯、熱帯の山岳地に約550種が分布する。日本にはウマノアシガタ（キンポウゲ）やミヤマキンポウゲなど27種が野生する。園芸界でラナンキュラスの名で市販されるのは、本属のうちヨーロッパから西南アジア原産のハナキンポウゲR. asiaticus L.から改良された系統のものをさす。露地では4月下旬から5月上旬に開花し、赤、桃、橙(だいだい)、黄、白など多彩である。普通は一重の5弁であるが、数十弁の大輪花も多い。花茎は高さ30～50センチメートル。切り花、鉢植え、花壇に利用される。酸性土を嫌い、また冬季に凍害を受けやすいので注意する。
