The Japanese name is likely a glorification of the beautiful fruit, borrowing from the name of the talented woman Murasaki Shikibu. The trunk is 1.5-3m tall, the twigs are round and grow obliquely upward, and when young, they have powdery, stellate hairs. The leaves are opposite, oblong, serrated, wedge-shaped at the base, and have short petioles. The flowers are pale purple, about 5mm in diameter, and grow in cymes with stalks from the leaf axils in June-July. The corolla is bell-shaped with four lobes at the tip, and four stamens and one style protrude from it.
