...A species of coelenterate (cnidaria) in the family Platygyridae of the subclass Hexacorallia of the class Anthozoa, or a general term for species in the genus Platygyra. Platygyra lamellina (illustration) is widely distributed from Suruga Bay to the South Pacific Ocean and is an important species of reef-building coral. It forms disc-shaped or clump-shaped colonies, and the largest ones can reach a diameter of over 1m.
