A village in Higashichikuma District, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,559 (1995). Located in the middle reaches of the Sai River, most of the village area is part of the Chikuma Mountains. The Sai River meanders through the center of the village as it flows north, and National Route 19 runs along the river. Agriculture used to be centered on sericulture, but this has decreased year by year, and rice, livestock farming, vegetable farming, shiitake mushroom cultivation, and enoki mushroom cultivation have increased. Depopulation is progressing, but in recent years there are many commuters to Matsumoto City and other areas. Yamakiyo Road on the Sai River in the north is known for its beautiful gorge. Ikusaka Dam is located almost in the center. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
