...A town in Shimoniikawa County, at the eastern end of Toyama Prefecture. Population 7,025 (1995). Geographically, it is composed of the Hida Mountains mountain range, centered on the Kurobe Gorge formed by the Kurobe River flowing north, and the top of the Kurobe alluvial fan downstream. In 1954, the three villages of Higashiyama, Aimoto, and Uchiyama merged to form a town. Akebi on the east bank of the top of the fan was established as a temple town for Hofukuji Temple, known for its children's dance, and Uraya on the west bank was a post station on the Hokuriku Road during the Edo period. The town developed rapidly after construction began by Japan Electric Power Company at the end of the Taisho era. There are 10 power plants, including the Kurobe River No. 4 Power Plant (Kansai Electric Power Company) in the Kurobe Gorge upstream from Aimoto, and 6 power plants (Hokuriku Electric Power Company and others) downstream, with a total output of approximately 900,000 kW (1997), making it one of Japan's leading hydroelectric power towns. ...
