It is the capital of Boyaca Department in northwestern South America, central Colombia. It is located 125 km northeast of the capital Bogotá, in a highland basin (2,820 m) in the Cordillera Oriental Mountains. Population 118,855 (1999), 202,996 (2019 estimate). It is one of the oldest cities in Colombia, founded in 1539 by G. S. Rondon Gonzalo Suárez Rendón (1503?-1583/1590), and old buildings such as churches and hospitals from the 16th to 18th centuries remain. The Colombian Independence Declaration Monument is located in the southern suburbs, and the hot spring resort of Paipa is located in the northern suburbs. It was the site of the palace of the Chibcha kings, and there are many indigenous relics and ruins, making it a popular historical city in Colombia.

南アメリカ北西部、コロンビア中部、ボヤカ県の県都。首都ボゴタの北東125キロメートル、コルディエラ・オリエンタル山脈中の高地盆地(2820メートル)に位置する。人口11万8855(1999)、20万2996(2019推計)。1539年G・S・ロンドンGonzalo Suárez Rendón(1503?―1583/1590)によって建設されたコロンビア最古の都市の一つで、16~18世紀の教会、病院など古い建造物が残る。南郊にコロンビア独立宣言記念碑があり、北郊には温泉保養地のパイパがある。チブチャ王の宮殿のあった所で、先住民の遺物や遺跡も多く、コロンビアの歴史都市として訪問者が多い。
