Around 1440 - 1521 A composer of the Flemish school. Respected as the greatest Renaissance musician, Luther praised him as "a master of music who commands the notes at will." As a young man, he left his native Flanders for Italy, where he served as a choirboy at Milan Cathedral from 1459 to the end of 1472. He then moved to the court of the Duke of Milan, where he served Ascanio Sforza from 1479 to 1486. When Ascanio became a cardinal, he became a choirboy in the papal chapel from 1486. In 1501, he went to France to serve at the court of Louis XII, but in 1503 he was appointed conductor of the court chapel of Ercole I, Duke of Ferrara, with whom he already had a close relationship.
