Gamou-no

Japanese:
Gamou-no
The fields spread across Gamo-gun, Omi Province, on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. In 668 Emperor Tenchi went on a medicinal hunt in Gamo-gun (Nihon Shoki), following the ancient Chinese custom of men hunting animals for medicinal purposes and women picking herbs. The exchange of poems between Princess Nukata and Prince Oama in the Man'yoshu is said to have occurred at this time. In 670 Emperor Tenchi went to the fields of Gamo-gun to "view the imperial grounds," and there is a theory that he was planning to move the capital there. In 803 Emperor Kanmu made a one-day visit to Gamo-gun. In the Middle Ages, the various villages of Tokuchinho gathered brushwood and the land was gradually turned into fields, and in 1525 there was a dispute with the various villages of Misono (Imahori Hiyoshi Shrine documents). During the Edo period, there was still uncultivated land that was shared by the surrounding villages, but although several plans to cultivate it were made in 1726 and 1842, they were cancelled, and by the Showa period the land was gradually converted into rice paddy fields.
