Born to a wealthy foreign resident, he emigrated to a colony in southern Italy, but later returned to Athens. In the political upheaval of 404 BC, his property was confiscated and he went into exile. He returned the following year when democracy was restored and made a living as a representative in court debates. In 388 BC, he gave a great speech at Olympia, urging Greece to end its internal conflicts and unite against the threat of Persia.
