The name of a princess who appears in a Persian tale of a bridegroom who solves riddles. The meaning is "Daughter of Turan." Turandot poses three riddles to her suitors, and declares that those who cannot solve them will be executed, and that she will marry the one who solves them. Many young men try, fail, and lose their lives. The first riddle is: What is that which is of all nations, is loved throughout the world, and is unique (the sun); the second is: What is the mother who feeds her children when they grow up (the ocean and the river); the third is: What is the tree that has 12 branches, each with 30 white and black leaves (year, month, day, night).
