A town in Nonsan County, South Chungcheong Province, Korea. Population 21,787 (1980). Located on the middle bank of the Geum River, it developed as a key location for river transport. Surrounded by rice-growing areas in the northern part of the Honam Plain, known as Korea's granary, the town was one of Korea's three largest markets, serving as a base for exporting rice and bringing in seafood, until the Honam Line (Daejeon to Mokpo) was opened in 1914. There was also a thriving cottage industry processing seafood. With the opening of the railway, river transport fell into disuse, and as commerce declined the population has declined year by year, and now there is no trace of its former self.
