The name of a herbal medicine preparation was given after the Roman physician Galen. Galen established a theory of drug combinations by classifying the effects of medicines into three types: (1) those that result from the essence contained in the medicine, (2) those that result from a mixture of the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth, and (3) those that result from the characteristics of each individual medicine. As a result, treatment was carried out using complex prescriptions that combined many herbal medicines. Today, this name is generally used for crude herbal medicine preparations.
