The name of a herbal medicine preparation was given after the Roman physician Galen. Galen established a theory of drug combinations by classifying the effects of medicines into three types: (1) those that result from the essence contained in the medicine, (2) those that result from a mixture of the four elements of fire, water, air, and earth, and (3) those that result from the characteristics of each individual medicine. As a result, treatment was carried out using complex prescriptions that combined many herbal medicines. Today, this name is generally used for crude herbal medicine preparations. [Watanabe Kazuo]

ローマ時代の医学者ガレノスの名にちなんでつけられた生薬製剤の名称。ガレノスは薬の作用を，(1)薬の中に含まれる原質から出るもの，(2)火，水，空気，土の4元素の混合によって出るもの，(3)個々の薬の特殊性によるもの，の3種に分類して薬の配合理論をうち立てた。これにより多数の生薬を配合した複雑な処方を用いて治療にあたった。今日では粗製の生薬製剤一般にこの名称が用いられる。【渡辺和夫】
