This is a library and research institute that collects and makes available to the public (Library Department) books and magazines related to humanities, humanities, and natural geography of various parts of Asia (including Japan), and publishes research and the results of such research and presents them at lectures (Research Department). In August 1917 (Taisho 6), Iwasaki Hisaya purchased 24,000 items, including European books, pamphlets, maps, and copperplate prints related to China from George Ernest Morrison, then advisor to the President of the Republic of China (former Beijing correspondent for The London Times), and expanded the scope of the collection to cover all of Asia. In November 1924, the institute was incorporated as a foundation, and continues to exist to this day. The number of books, microfilms, and other research materials is increasing every year, and as of 1986 (Showa 61), the total number is approximately 700,000. Among its most famous collections are the Iwasaki Collection, which includes old Japanese books, many handwritten works by scholars and writers from the Edo period, the Dunhuang manuscripts, which are copies of originals in London, Paris, and Beijing, and the 60,000-page collection of letters from the Jesuits housed at the Ajuda Palace in Lisbon. The museum is located at 2-28-21 Honkomagome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
