Protocol - Decision

The title of a position in the central government in the early Meiji period. One of the three offices newly established following the political upheaval of the Restoration of Imperial Rule on January 3, 1868 (December 9, Keio 3). In contrast to the councilors, who were made up of lower-ranking courtiers and feudal samurai, the councilors were made up of princes, feudal lords, and higher-ranking courtiers, and under the seven departments and eight bureaus system, they served as the heads of each department. In addition, while the councilors' meeting was called the lower house or lower council, the councilors' meeting was called the upper house or upper council. On April 21, leap year 1868, the Dajokan was restored based on the Seitaisho (Cabinet Document) and the three offices system was abolished, but the councilors, along with the councilors, continued to exist as members of the upper bureau of the Councilors' Office until May of the following year.

明治初年の中央政府の役職名。1868年1月3日（慶応3年12月9日）の王政復古の政変に伴って新設された三職の一つ。下級廷臣、藩士からなる参与に対して、親王、諸侯、上級廷臣により構成されており、七科制、八局制のもとでは各長官を兼任していた。また、参与の会議が下議院ないし下の議事所といわれたのに対して、議定の会議は上議院ないし上の議事所とよばれた。慶応4年（1868）閏(うるう)4月21日、政体書に基づいて太政官(だじょうかん)が復興され三職制は廃止されたが、議定は参与とともに議政官上局の構成員として翌年5月まで存続した。
