[The Legend of Antoku]
If we are to find the roots of the legend that Emperor Antoku wandered and survived after the Battle of Dannoura, we must go back to Volume 11 of the Tale of the Heike, "The Former Emperor Throws Himself." The young Emperor Antoku, in the arms of Nii-no-ama, is said to have sunk deep to the bottom of the sea at Dannoura, but when we look at the various versions of the Kakuichi series, at the beginning it says, "His black hair fluttered as he passed by," but later it says, "He was wearing a dove-colored robe and his hair fluttered about." There are clear inconsistencies in the description of Emperor Antoku, and it is hard to believe that they are the same person, which gives rise to the theory that a substitute emperor could be used.

　安徳天皇が壇ノ浦の戦ののちも流離し，生存したという伝承の根を探るとすれば，《平家物語》巻十一〈先帝身投〉にまで戻らねばならない。二位尼に抱かれた幼帝安徳は壇ノ浦の海底深く沈んだことになっているが，覚一本系の諸本を見ると，はじめのところでは〈御髪黒うゆらゆらとして御せなか過ぎさせ給へり〉とあり，そのあとには〈山鳩色の御衣にびんづらゆはせ給ひて〉となっていて，明らかに安徳帝の描写に矛盾があり，同一人物とは思えないところから替玉説が浮上してくる。…
