A form of vocal music from North India. At first, it was used to accompany dance and drama at the 19th century court of Lucknow, but eventually a unique singing style that emphasized the expression of lyrics was established, spreading to Varanasi and Punjab, reaching its heyday in the early 20th century. As court culture declined, thumri singers lost their venues for activity, but khayal singers actively took up thumri as relatively short pieces, and thumri as a song survived. It is a free verse form in a dialect of Hindi, and sings about love. Because it places more importance on emotional expression than classical music theory, it is classified as light classical music along with ghazals and bhajans.

北インドの声楽曲の一形式。19世紀ラクナウの宮廷では当初，舞踊や演劇に伴うものだったが，やがて歌詞の表出を重んじる独自の歌唱法が確立，バラナシやパンジャーブへと広まり，20世紀初頭に全盛期を迎える。宮廷文化の後退のなかで，トゥムリー歌手は活動の場を失うが，カヤール歌手たちが比較的短い小品として積極的に取り上げ，歌としてのトゥムリーは生き残った。自由な詩形のヒンディー語の方言で，恋愛を歌う。古典音楽理論より感情表現が重視されるため，ガザルやバジャン等とともに，ライト・クラシカル（軽古典音楽）に分類される。
