A British English teacher who came to Japan during the Meiji period. He taught at the Tokyo English School, the University of Tokyo Preparatory School, and the First Higher Middle School (University of Tokyo Faculty of Liberal Arts). After graduating from Oxford University in England, he came to Japan on March 22, 1875, and introduced British sports to students in addition to his main duties. His efforts are largely responsible for the start of the Tokyo University Continental Athletic Meet in 1881, the University Rowing Meet the following year in 1882, and the founding of the University Athletic Meet in 1884. He was also active in foreign resident sports clubs in Tokyo and Yokohama, and acted as a bridge between students and foreign residents in sports. 明治時代に来日したイギリス人英語教師。東京英語学校,東大予備門,第一高等中学校(東大教養学部)で教えた。イギリスオックスフォード大学を卒業後,明治8(1875)年3月22日来日し,本務のかたわら学生にイギリスのスポーツを紹介した。16年の東大陸上運動会開始,翌17年の同大競漕会開始および同19年の同大運動会創立は,その努力に負うところが大きい。また,自ら東京や横浜の居留外国人スポーツクラブで活動し,学生と居留外国人とのスポーツ交流の橋渡しを行った。東京で没し,青山墓地に葬られた。<著作>《Outdoor Games》<参考文献>渡辺融「F.
