Year of death: 1889.7.5 (1889.7.5) Year of birth: 1854.1 A British English teacher who came to Japan during the Meiji period. He taught at the Tokyo English School, the University of Tokyo Preparatory School, and the First Higher Middle School (University of Tokyo Faculty of Liberal Arts). After graduating from Oxford University in England, he came to Japan on March 22, 1875, and introduced British sports to students in addition to his main duties. His efforts are largely responsible for the start of the Tokyo University Continental Athletic Meet in 1881, the University Rowing Meet the following year in 1882, and the founding of the University Athletic Meet in 1884. He was also active in foreign resident sports clubs in Tokyo and Yokohama, and acted as a bridge between students and foreign residents in sports.
