Balanus reticulatus (English name: Balanus reticulatus)
A crustacean of the Cirripedidae family (illustration) that is known to be the most damaging of all the barnacles that attach to the bottom of ships and cause fouling. This species is found in seas with high salinity and is widely distributed around the world. The shell diameter is about 10 to 15 mm. The upper edge of the shell is sharp and tooth-like, and the tips of the shell plates may be curved outward. The surface of the shell is smooth and has wide, dark purple vertical stripes that cross reddish-brown horizontal stripes. In addition to attaching to the bottom of ships, it also attaches to stones and shells below the low tide line.
