It is one of the names of stone tools from the Paleolithic period. Its translation is nigiri-oto (hand axe) or nigiri-zuchi (hand mallet). Its uses are unspecialized, and it is thought to have been used as a universal tool for cutting, scraping, digging, etc., but since it cannot be limited to a specific purpose, it is also called biface (double-sided stone tool) or coup-de-poing (French: coup-de-poing). It was used exclusively in the Early Paleolithic period, mainly in Europe and Africa, and is a typical stone tool of the Shell and Acheulean cultures from the Mindel Glacial Period to the Liss Glacial Period (500,000 to 230,000 years ago). Compared to the Shell culture's hand axes, which were roughly chipped with a stone hammer, the Acheulean hand axes were processed with hammers made of soft materials such as antler or wood rather than stone, and there are excellent examples that can be considered works of art with excellent adjustments.
