This refers to the process in which a certain behavioral pattern, which may be useful for communication between animals, becomes functionally strengthened during the course of evolution and becomes specialized to increase clarity and precision. Often, practical actions are transformed into symbolic actions, and appear in the form of simplification, repetition of essential parts, and emphasis on certain elements. This concept was proposed by J. Huxley (1914) based on his observations of the courtship behavior of great crested grebes. In general, ritualistic behavior is often seen during mating or fighting, and the body shape, color, and patterns associated with this behavior often become specialized.
