An institution for the production of Buddhist statues and accessories under the Todaiji Construction Office. It developed from the Buddha statue factory of Konkomyo-ji Temple, the predecessor of Todaiji Temple. The staff consisted of two chief priests, the general, the chief priest, etc. Over a thousand craftsmen (miscellaneous workers) were registered, and they also produced Buddha statues for Ishiyama-dera Temple in Omi, Saidai-ji Temple and Toshodai-ji Temple in Nara, etc. It was downsized when the Todaiji Construction Office was abolished in 789. 造東大寺司に属した仏像および付属品製作のための機関。東大寺の前身である金光明(こんこうみょう)寺の造仏所から発展した。職員は長官の別当が2人,将領(しょうりょう)・長上(ちょうじょう)など。千人以上の技術者(雑工)が登録されており,近江石山寺,奈良西大寺・唐招提寺などの造仏も行った。789年の造東大寺司停廃とともに縮小された。
