A city occupying the northern part of the Okazaki Plain in the mid-west of Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The city center is on the left bank of the Sakai River, which forms the border between Owari and Mikawa and flows into Chita Bay. It developed as a castle town in 1533 when Mizuno Tadamasa built Kame Castle. It developed into an industrial city with the opening of the Tokaido Main Line in the mid-Meiji period and the Meitetsu Mikawa Line in the early Taisho period, and the establishment of factories by Toyoda Boshoku and Toyota Automatic Loom Works at the end of the Taisho period. The transportation equipment industry accounts for more than 60% of the city's manufactured goods shipment value of approximately 1.3 trillion yen (2003). 50.39 km2 . 145,781 people (2010). 愛知県中西部,岡崎平野北部を占める市。1950年市制。中心市街は尾張・三河国境をなして知多湾に注ぐ境川左岸にあり,1533年水野忠政の亀城築城に始まる城下町として発達。明治中期に東海道本線,大正初期に名鉄三河線開通や大正末の豊田紡織,豊田自動織機の工場設立を機に工業都市として発展した。輸送用機器工業が市の製造品出荷額約1兆3000億円の6割以上(2003)を占めている。50.39km2。14万5781人(2010)。
