Arbogast (English spelling)
[raw]?
[Died] September 8, 394.
A Roman general of Frankish origin. He served under Emperor Gratian and rose to the position of prefect of cavalry, then held real power as prefect of military affairs under Valentinian II. He eventually came into conflict with the emperor, and in 392 probably killed Valentinian II, installed the Roman rhetorician F. Eugenius as emperor, and attempted to revive paganism. However, he was defeated by Theodosius I, who did not recognize Eugenius, at the Battle of Frigidus in northern Italy, and committed suicide.
