Years of birth: unknown. An official in the early Heian period. Son of Ishio. As befitting a family of warriors for generations, he was said to be "more valiant than any man" and spent most of his life as a military officer. In January 871, he was appointed as the governor of Tsushima and was in charge of the defense of the Western Sea, but he applied to have "guards" made to reinforce the functionality of armor and "leather bags" for carrying military supplies made. In March of the same year, he also applied to be granted the sheepskin armor that his father had worn when he put down the rebellion in Mutsu, and was granted. He was later dismissed from his position, but in 878, when the Emishi rebellion (the Gangyo Rebellion) broke out at Akita Castle in Dewa Province, he was selected as the chonju shogun, and it is said that he abandoned his armor and bow and arrows, entered the rebel territory alone, and subjugated the Emishi without bloodshed. This may be due to the fact that he lived in a remote area from an early age and was able to speak the "Yi language" ("Fujiwara no Yasunori Biography"). His poems are included in the "Kokin Wakashu".
