A country in southeastern South America. Official name: Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Located east of the Uruguay River. Capital: Montevideo. One third of the country is grassland, and livestock farming is thriving. Produces wool and beef. During the colonial period, it was a disputed territory between Portugal and Spain.
