A city in Tehran Province in northern Iran. It is located on a vast, fertile plain at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. It is a key transportation hub, connected by road and rail to Tehran and Tabriz, and also to the Caspian Sea and Hamadan to the southwest. Its industry is centered on diverse agriculture. It has a history dating back to before the 4th century, and flourished as a missionary base in the early Islamic period, but was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. It was later restored and made the capital by Safavid Sultan Tamasp I, a position it maintained until it was moved to Isfahan (present-day Isfahan) under Abbas I. Population: 278,826 (1991).
