Qazvin

A city in Tehran Province in northern Iran. It is located on a vast, fertile plain at the southern foot of the Elburz Mountains. It is a key transportation hub, connected by road and rail to Tehran and Tabriz, and also to the Caspian Sea and Hamadan to the southwest. Its industry is centered on diverse agriculture. It has a history dating back to before the 4th century, and flourished as a missionary base in the early Islamic period, but was destroyed by the Mongol invasion in the 13th century. It was later restored and made the capital by Safavid Sultan Tamasp I, a position it maintained until it was moved to Isfahan (present-day Isfahan) under Abbas I. Population: 278,826 (1991).

イラン北部，テヘラン州の都市。エルブールズ山脈南麓の広大で肥沃な平野に位置する。道路と鉄道でテヘラン，タブリーズと結ばれ，カスピ海や南西のハマダーンには道路で結ばれる交通の要衝。産業は変化に富む農業に集中している。4世紀以前からの歴史をもち，イスラム時代初期にその宣教基地として栄えたが，13世紀にモンゴルの侵略を受けて破壊された。のちに復興し，サファビー朝のタマースプ1世により首都とされ，アッバース1世のときイスファハン (現エスファハン) に移されるまで，その地位を保った。人口 27万 8826 (1991) 。
