A volcanic island in the South Atlantic, a British territory. It has an area of 98 km2 and a population of 298 (1995). It is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 37°6'S and 12°15'W, roughly halfway between the Cape of Good Hope in Africa and the South American continent, and forms an archipelago with the nearby uninhabited islands of Inaccessible Island and Nightingale Island. It is a cone-shaped island that reaches a maximum height of 2060m, and has a mild climate due to the westerly winds. Its main industry is fishing, and it also grows potatoes for self-sufficiency. It was discovered by the Portuguese Tristan da Cunha in 1506, and was occupied by the British Navy in 1816 to keep an eye on Napoleon on St. Helena.
