An evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family. Also known as Iwatsubaki. It is found in the mountains of the Kanto, Tokai and Kinki regions. It grows 30-150cm tall, hanging down from cliffs. The leaves are alternate, long ovate, 5-8cm long, acutely pointed, with serrated edges, thick, hairless and glossy. In June and July, short racemes appear in the leaf axils, with several drooping white tubular flowers. The corolla is 1.5-2cm long, has 5 shallow lobes on the edge and 10 stamens. The fruit is an oblate capsule that grows upward at the end of the stalk. The Japanese name comes from the fact that it grows on rocky areas and the shape of its leaves resembles that of Nandina (Nandina).
