Todaiji Temple - Four Scenic Spots of Todaiji Temple

Japanese: 東大寺山堺四至図 - とうだいじさんかいししず

This map shows the boundaries of Todaiji Temple with red lines (21 lines east-west, 16 lines north-south) of roughly 1 cho square. In one corner there is an inscription in ink that reads, "Map of Todaiji Temple. Tenpyo Shoho 8th year (756), June 9th, Sakai-tome temple territory...." The hemp cloth (with an inscription dated October 6th year of Tenpyo Shoho) is sewn together in three tiers, and is 222cm long and 229cm wide. Owned by Shosoin. The temple territory is the Saho River to the north, the Noto River to the south, the upper reaches of both rivers to the east, and Tokyo Kyokuoji to the west. The names of 10 places from Ichisakai Someya to Tosakai-jimichi are inscribed on the map. The illustration also depicts the Sanmon Gate, the East and West Pagodas, the Great Buddha Hall, the Kaidan-in Temple, the Knot Hall, and the Senjudo Hall on the western side of the wall, and also includes the names of Shinchi, Shin Yakushiji Hall, Kozan Hall (the predecessor of Shin Yakushiji Temple), Mt. Mifune, Minamikitadoyama Peak, and Iimori Peak.

東大寺領界をほぼ1町方格の朱線(東西21本，南北16本)を引いて絵図で示したもの。隅に〈東大寺図　天平勝宝八歳(756)六月九日定堺為寺領地……〉の墨書がある。麻布(天平勝宝6年10月の端書あり)を3段に縫い合わせてあり，縦222cm，横229cm。正倉院所蔵。　寺領は北は佐保川，南は能登川，東は両川の上流，西は東京極大路であり，一堺染谷から十堺寺道に至る10ヵ所の地点名が記されている。また図には西面大垣に三門と東西塔，大仏殿，戒壇院，羂索堂，千手堂が描かれ，ほかに神地，新薬師寺堂，香山堂(新薬師寺の前身)，御蓋山，南北度山峯，飯守峯等の名が記される。
