Japanese: トウゾクカモメ(盗賊鷗) - トウゾクカモメ（英語表記）skua

A general term for seabirds in the Stercorariidae family of the Charadriiformes, or one of these species. This family is usually divided into four species, all of which are distributed in Japan and live in the open sea or on the coast. Their bodies are sturdy and strong like those of gulls, and their wings are long and pointed. However, their heads and backs are black-brown, making them appear darker than gulls, and they have long tails. The three species other than the great skua have white bellies, but the skua and black skua have dark types with black bellies. Their beaks are curved into a hooked tip.

チドリ目トウゾクカモメ科Stercorariidaeの海鳥の総称，またはそのうちの1種を指す。この科はふつう4種に分類されるが，いずれも日本にも分布し，外海や沿岸で生活する。体はカモメ類に似てがんじょうで強く，翼も長めで先がとがっている。しかし頭頂と背面が黒褐色でカモメより黒っぽく見え，尾が長い。オオトウゾクカモメ以外の3種は腹が白いが，トウゾクカモメとクロトウゾクカモメには腹の黒い暗色型がある。くちばしは先がかぎ状に曲がっている。
