Thieves' Church Council - Thieves' Church Council
An ecumenical council held in Ephesus, Asia Minor, in 449. It is also known as the "Robber Council." It was held the previous year to discuss the issue of Eutyches, who had been declared a Monophysite heretic. The Monophysite Bishop Dioscorus of Alexandria dominated the council by force, and passed a resolution to reinstate Eutyches and dismiss Bishop Flaviano (Flavianus) of Constantinople and others, proclaiming the victory of Monophysitism. However, with the sudden death of Emperor Theodosius II, the Church's trends changed, and the Council of Chalcedon (451) annulled the name of the council and all of the decisions of the Council of Ephesus.
