The World as Will and Representation

...The phenomenon of eros, which Plato called the daimon and which he always associated with intoxication and madness, was difficult to handle from the standpoint of rationalism, which dominated modern philosophy. The exceptional case in which the metaphysics of eros and sexual love was fully developed was the irrational philosopher Schopenhauer's The World as Will and Representation (1819). He argued that the love affair that men and women feel is nothing more than a tragicomic illusion caused by the expression of the sexual urge as the will of the species.
