A new religion that was established after World War II. PL is an abbreviation of Perfect Liberty. In 1924, Tokuichi Miki (1871-1938) founded the Hitonomichi sect under the influence of Tokumitsukyo. His eldest son, Tokuchika Miki (1900-1983), renovated the name and doctrine and re-established the sect in Tosu, Saga Prefecture in September 1946. Based on the idea that a succession of religious leaders (oshie-oya) have appeared and that the teachings are to be preached by the current leader, Tokuchika is revered as the founder, and Kaneda Tokumitsu is worshipped as the ghost founder (kakuri-oya). The core doctrine is the 21 precepts of life, including "Life is art," "A person's life is self-expression," and "The self is an expression of God." They also place great importance on "Shikiri" (a ritual in which the teacher takes on the burden of everyday life or makes a wish come true), and "Omisari Shinto" (a ritual in which the teacher takes on the burden of everyday life temporarily). They instruct their followers to live creative and inventive lives based on the Shoseikun (the teachings of the priesthood), and the religious organization itself is particularly focused on artistic and cultural activities such as fireworks. In recent years, they have been active in health management and plant research, aiming to unite science and religion. They are active in overseas missionary work in South America, especially Brazil. They publish many journals, including Geijutsu Seikatsu (Art Life) and PL Junior (both monthly), and Geisei Shimbun (weekly). The official number of followers is about 1.18 million (1996), and the headquarters is in Shindo, Tondabayashi City, Osaka Prefecture.
