...Various free-reed keyboard instruments were prototyped and given names such as the orgue expressif and aeoline. The Frenchman Alexandre François Debain (1809-1877) produced a four-stop instrument that was a compilation of these, which he named "harmonium" and obtained a patent for in 1840. This name has since become the common name for this type of instrument.
