A medium-length novel by Tsubouchi Shoyo. There is a tsunogaki (a square inscription) for "One read, three laments." Published from June 1885 (Meiji 18) to January 1886, 17 volumes in total, with two omnibus volumes in February, by Banseido. The author's name is Haruno Yaoboro. A young woman named O-Yoshi, who was separated from her family during the Ueno War during the Meiji Restoration and began to wander, is picked up by Komachida Kouji and his son Sanji near Oji Gongen, and grows up with Sanji. O-Yoshi, who has become a geisha, and Sanji, a student, are reunited on Mount Asuka, and as their love for each other deepens, the time comes for mother and daughter to be reunited thanks to the efforts of her father and brother. The story begins with the reunion with Asukayama and progresses while depicting the present of the protagonist, Sanji, but his human history matures through three overlapping "times": the time of his meeting with O-Fumi, the time of their reunion, and the time that is currently ongoing. In addition to the common view that this is an improved human novel that follows the maturation of a man from a student to a gentleman, it is necessary to reconsider the three-dimensional structure of the realistic novel, which has a tale of wandering and a tale of fate deep within it.
