Otori Shrine

Japanese:
Otori Shrine

Located in Otorikita-cho, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture. It enshrines Otori Muraji no Mioya no Kami and Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, who was enshrined in 1957 (Showa 32). The founding date is unknown. According to the shrine's legend, the spirit of Yamato Takeru turned into a swan and flew away from the place where he was buried, and the shrine was built on the spot where he finally came to rest. It is a famous shrine in the Engishiki, and has received official offerings for the Toshigoi, Tsukinami, and Niiname ceremonies. Together with the four shrines listed in the Engishiki, Otori Minamihi Shrine, Otori Kitahama Shrine, Otori Hama Shrine, and Otori Ise Shrine, it was called Otori Gosha Myojin. Also known as Izumi Province's Ichinomiya (Ichinomiya), it was ranked as a Kanpei Taisha (Great Shrine) in 1871 (Meiji 4). The current main hall was rebuilt in 1909 in the same style as the old national treasure main hall, which burned down in 1905 (Meiji 38), and is called "Otori-zukuri". The architectural style is similar to the "Taisha-zukuri" style of Izumo Taisha, but it has some unique features such as the main entrance being closer to the center and the lack of a corridor. The annual festival is held on August 13th. A special ritual, the "Hanatsumi Festival," is held on April 13th, in which flower-picking women pick wild flowers and offer them to the altar.
