...But it was the first "theatre of deconstruction" in European theater, and the long reach of Mallarmé's problem consciousness foretold radical questions about modern theater. Claudel's plays, which were born in this soil, connected the potential of symbolist theater to a rich theatrical universe, even though they were not performed at the time, and Jarry's "Ubu roi," which caused a scandal when it was premiered by Runier Pau, was on the one hand Yeats's return to indigenous Irish mythology, and on the other hand a precursor to Dada and Surrealism in the early 20th century. The later movement of Copeau's Théâtre du Vieux Colombier also took Mallarmé as a guide, and even Artaud, in a sense, thought on the horizon opened by the Symbolists. ...

From [Avant-Garde Theatre]

...In a sense, these new plays were the driving force behind the rise of the avant-garde theater movement on a global scale from the 1960s through the early 1970s, and there are many people who consider only this series of movements to be so-called "avant-garde theater" in the narrow sense. In any case, these new plays can be said to be particularly significant when considering the avant-garde spirit in 20th century theater.
[The Emergence of Theatre of the Absurd and its Global Influence]
It is generally accepted that the origins of "theatre of the absurd" or "anti-theatre" can be traced back to the fin de siècle performance of A. Jary's "Ubu Roi" (1896). Although the play was set in Poland, but "nowhere in the world," it startled the audience with the provocative phrase "Dammit!" at the very beginning, and became a guideline for later Surrealist theater.
