The Taira no Masakado Rebellion

Japanese:
The Taira no Masakado Rebellion
This was a rebellion that occurred in the Kanto region in the 10th century. Along with the rebellion of Fujiwara no Sumitomo that occurred at the same time in the Western Sea, it is also known as the "Johei-Tengyo Rebellion" or "Tengyo Rebellion." Masakado, whose base was in northern Shimousa, had been engaged in repeated battles since 935 (Johei 5) with his clan members Taira no Kuniyoshi, Taira no Sadamori, Yoshikane, and Yoshimasa, who had mansions in western Hitachi. In November 939 (Tenkei 2), he plundered and burned down the Hitachi provincial government office and captured the provincial governor Fujiwara no Yasukazu and others. There are two theories about the direct cause of this: one is that the army clashed with the government in order to rescue Fujiwara no Genmei, who had fled Hitachi to Shimousa relying on Masakado, and the other is that Yasukazu's son Tamenori allied with Masakado's sworn enemy Sadamori and provoked Masakado. Both theories are based on Masamune's Chronicle 》it looks like.
