A dispute that occurred at the Yomiuri Shimbun after World War II. In October 1945, employees of the company formed a union, demanding the resignation of president Shoriki Matsutaro and other executives responsible for the war, and democratization within the company. When this was refused, the union began a struggle for production control. In December, Shoriki was arrested as a war criminal, and the union ended up winning. Later, in July 1946, the occupying forces warned the company about violating the press code due to the paper's left-wing content, and the company went ahead and fired and demoted editorial executives. This led to a second dispute, but the union split and a second union was formed. The Japan Newspaper, Communications and Broadcasting Workers' Union supported the first union, but a newspaper general strike in October failed, and the union suffered a crushing defeat with 31 employees resigning.
