Mimeograph - Toushaban

A simple stencil printing machine used to eliminate the need to copy the same documents or papers by hand. Also called a "mikey block," it is distinct from general printing. Plate making involves writing on wax or type paper with an iron stylus over a file, or printing with a typewriter to create a stencil. As technology has improved, it has become possible to produce multicolor printing and even photo stencils, and it has even become possible to print characters with clear strokes that are comparable to those produced by letterpress or offset printing.

Printing presses can be broadly divided into roller (lithographic) mimeographs and rotary mimeographs. With the roller type, the stencil is stretched over a frame and then a roller soaked in ink is rubbed over it to print on paper placed underneath. Rotary types include tabletop and manual types, as well as electrically operated types. There are two types of presses: single-cylinder type with one cylinder and double-cylinder type with two cylinders. Depending on the ink supply method, there are centrifugal force type, coating type, and ink mixing double-cylinder type. Roller types have been in use for a long time, but the first rotary type was invented in 1900 by British toy merchant David Gestetner, who invented a double-cylinder type. The single-cylinder type was created in 1901 by American stationery merchant A.B. Dick. In Japan, the first monohull model was released in 1910 (Meiji 43) by Horii Toshodo in Tokyo.

In Japan, the use of mimeographs dropped sharply with the advent of word processors, the subsequent development of easy printing using personal computers, and the widespread use of copy machines, and by the late 1980s they had become almost extinct. On the other hand, there are still many areas in Africa and Asia where electricity is not available, and mimeographs are still used in these areas.

同一の文書や書類など、多数筆写の手間を省くために用いる簡便な孔版印刷機。「ガリ版」ともいわれ、一般の印刷とは区別されている。製版は、ろう原紙またはタイプ原紙に、やすりの上で鉄筆を用いて書いたり、あるいはタイプで印字することにより孔版する仕組みである。技術の改良が進み、多色印刷や写真孔版までつくることができるようになり、さらに活版やオフセット印刷とも変わらない字画の鮮明な印刷ができるようになった。

　印刷機は大別して、ローラー式（平版式）謄写版と輪転式謄写機に分けられる。ローラー式は、原紙を枠に張り、その上からインキを含ませたローラーでなでて、下部にセットした紙に印刷する方式のものである。輪転式は、卓上型や手動式のほか、電力で稼動させる電動式がある。また形式では、1本の胴筒をもつ単胴型と、2本の円筒をもつ複胴型の2種があり、インキ補給方式によっても遠心力利用方式、塗布方式、インキ練り双胴方式などがある。ローラー式は古くから使われていたが、輪転式は1900年にイギリスの玩具商デビッド・ゲステットナーが複胴式のものを発明したのが最初である。単胴式は1901年にアメリカの文具商A・B・ディックによってつくられた。日本では1910年（明治43）に、東京の堀井謄写堂から単胴型第1号が発売されたのが最初である。

　日本においては、ワープロの出現、その後のパソコンによる簡易印刷の発達、そしてコピー機の普及などで謄写版の使用は急減し、1980年代後半にはほとんどみられなくなった。一方、アフリカやアジアなどでは、いまだに電気の通じない地域が多くあり、それらの地域では謄写版が活用されている。
