Niger's capital city and river port city. It is located on the east bank of the Niger River in the southwest of the country. It was a small village of the Djerma people, but in 1926 it was moved from Zindel in French Niger. It is a key location for trade routes across the Sahara Desert, shipping along the Niger River, and road transport, and is a key point for inland transport in the western part of the African continent. It is also a commercial center, and is the location of the distribution of grains, peanuts, corn, livestock, and leather, as well as cotton spinning, brick, and food processing factories. It is connected to the port of Cotonou in Benin by rail and road, and many of Niger's exports pass through this route. A new city was developed around the Kennedy Bridge (1970) that spans the Niger River. It has the National Museum, known for its collection of cultural artifacts from the prehistoric and Islamic civilization periods, the University of Niamey, and an international airport. Population: 707,951 (2001). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
