Niger's capital city and river port city. It is located on the east bank of the Niger River in the southwest of the country. It was a small village of the Djerma people, but in 1926 it was moved from Zindel in French Niger. It is a key location for trade routes across the Sahara Desert, shipping along the Niger River, and road transport, and is a key point for inland transport in the western part of the African continent. It is also a commercial center, and is the location of the distribution of grains, peanuts, corn, livestock, and leather, as well as cotton spinning, brick, and food processing factories. It is connected to the port of Cotonou in Benin by rail and road, and many of Niger's exports pass through this route. A new city was developed around the Kennedy Bridge (1970) that spans the Niger River. It has the National Museum, known for its collection of cultural artifacts from the prehistoric and Islamic civilization periods, the University of Niamey, and an international airport. Population: 707,951 (2001).

ニジェールの首都。河港都市。ニアメー県の県都。同国南西部，ニジェール川東岸に位置。ジェルマ族の小村であったが，1926年フランス領ニジェールのジンデルから遷都。サハラ砂漠縦断交易路，ニジェール川舟運，道路交通の要地で，アフリカ大陸西部の内陸交通の要衝。商業中心地でもあり，穀物，ナンキンマメ，トウモロコシ，家畜，皮革などの集散のほか，綿紡績，煉瓦，食品加工などの工場が立地。ベナンのコトヌー港と鉄道，道路で結ばれ，ニジェールの輸出品の多くがこの経路を通る。ニジェール川をまたぐケネディ橋 (1970) を中心に新市街が開ける。先史時代，イスラム文明時代の文物の収集で知られる国立博物館やニアメー大学，国際空港がある。人口 70万7951（2001）。
