… After 1619, the excavation of canals, the construction of walls, forts, trading houses, and houses were repeated, and the town expanded significantly, especially after Sultan Agung, the king of Mataram, failed expeditions to Batavia in 1628 and 1629. The town extended south along the canal to form the present Kota district, and from the mid-18th century, a church, a square, the government office, a law school, and a city hall were built in the Weltevreden district (present-day central Jakarta), and a new outer port was built in Tanjung Priok to the east between 1877 and 1917. Furthermore, military facilities were established in the Meester Cornelius district (present-day Jatinegara) to the southeast, further expanding the town's periphery. …
