The name of the head of a Kabuki musical instrument school and Azuma Ryu two-stringed koto school. The first Tosha Ashifune (1830-89) was originally a taiko drummer of the Kanze school of Noh. He switched to Kabuki musical instrument playing at the end of the Edo period, became a disciple of Mochizuki Tazaemon V and took the name Mochizuki Taijiro I. He began working as a taiko drummer and kotsuzumi drummer in Kabuki around 1859 (Ansei 6). In the early Meiji period, he took the name Tosha Ashifune and participated in Azuma Noh Kyogen, a form of Noh performed with Joruri and Nagauta accompaniment, and is said to have provided valuable advice to Kineya Katsusaburo II on the composition of the Azuma Noh Kyogen plays "Adachigahara" and "Funabenkei." 歌舞伎囃子方と東流(あずまりゆう)二弦琴の家元名。初世藤舎芦船(1830‐89)はもと能楽観世流太鼓方。江戸時代末期に歌舞伎囃子方に転向し,5世望月太左衛門の門弟となり初世望月太意次郎を名のる。1859年(安政6)ころより歌舞伎の太鼓方,小鼓方を勤める。明治初年に藤舎芦船を名のり,浄瑠璃や長唄によって能を舞う吾妻能狂言(あづまのうきようげん)に参画し,2世杵屋(きねや)勝三郎の吾妻能狂言《安達原》《船弁慶》の作曲に有力な助言を与えたという。
