A device for absolute measurement of sound intensity. It is a mica or glass disk about 5 mm in diameter and 0.1 mm thick, suspended from a thin quartz or platinum wire with a diameter of 3 to 5 μm. When sound waves strike this disk from an oblique direction (45 degrees), a moment proportional to the sound intensity causes the disk to rotate, and it comes to a stop when it is balanced with the moment caused by the twist of the quartz wire that is suspending it. The angle of twist at this time can be measured by magnifying it with a mirror attached to the wire, and the sound intensity can be calculated.
