A small perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (illustration) that is distributed mainly in the tropical regions of Asia and grows from Australia to Japan. Itsukushima in Hiroshima Prefecture is the northernmost place in Japan where it is grown. The Japanese name "Koke" refers to the small size of this species, and "Senbon" refers to the numerous flower stalks with small flower heads at the terminal. Incidentally, Senbonyari, also a member of the Asteraceae family, was named after its flower stalk, which looks like 1000 spears. The leaves are rosette-shaped, oblong-ovate, 12-30 cm long and 7-13 mm wide, and densely covered with soft hairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
